Wellsboro put together a 24-point third quarter to break open a 4-point lead at halftime to defeat Jersey Shore 72-57 in non-league play on Monday, January 8.
The win is the Hornets' third in a row and comes on the heels of defeating rival North Penn-Mansfield Friday in the Margaret (Peg) Berguson Memorial Trophy game.
30 of Jersey Shore's points came from behind the three-point line.
Wellsboro led 15-12 after the opening quarter then outscored the Bulldogs 16-15 in the second to lead 31-27 at halftime. It wasn't until the 3rd quarter that the Hornets put some distance between themselves and Jersey Shore.
Sophomore Luke Rothermel's 7 points in the quarter led Wellsboro in a 24-16 run that increased the lead to 55-43. Wellsboro outscored the Bulldogs 17-14 in the 4th quarter for the win.
Wellsboro had five players score in double figures on the evening, led by senior Hayes Campbell with 18 points. Rothermel finished with 16 points, senior Ian Hoose added 13, and senior Caden Smith and junior Mitchel Lechler dropped 11 points apiece. Rothermel and Smith pulled down 8 and 7 rebounds, respectively while Smith made 10 assists for a double-double. Campbell grabbed 3 rebounds and made 4 assists, Hoose had 4 rebounds and 3 assists, and Lechler also made 7 assists. Sophomore Aaron Kirk also grabbed 3 rebounds.
Landon Lathan led Jersey Shore with 15 points.
In the JV game, Wellsboro had their 7-game win streak snapped as Jersey Shore won 43-35. Jonathan Carl led the Hornets with 12 points.
Wellsboro improves to 6-3 (4-2 NTL Large School Division) following the win. The team is at undefeated Troy on Wednesday.
