The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team concluded NTL play with a 6-1 win over Towanda on Thursday, May 16.
"Great team win tonight. We did a lot of little things that it takes to win and I'm happy about the continual effort from the team," head coach Kyle Smith said. "Our two freshman starters shined tonight. Coen Tennis had a couple big hits for us, including his first high school home run and Max Mascho pitched a tremendous game. Max settled in, worked out of a couple of jams and found a consistent rhythm."
After a scoreless 1st inning the Hornets took the lead in the 2nd. Junior Gabe Sprouse was hit by a pitch then Tennis followed with a double in the next at bat, scoring Sprouse. A single from junior Ryder Bowen scored Tennis to make it 2-0 before Bowen scored to make it 3-0.
Tennis increased the lead with his first career home run in the 3rd before sophomore Cameron Owlett and senior Caden Smith scored in the 4th. Owlett doubled then advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Dylan Copp. Smith hit a base knock to score Owlett, then later scored on a sac fly by Sprouse.
Towanda's lone run came in the 4th.
Smith, Tennis and Bowen all finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate while Oweltt was 2-for-3 and junior Lucas Cuneo was 1-for-4. Tennis drove in 2 runs on the night while Smith, Sprouse and Bowen all had RBIs.
Mascho stared and threw 6 innings before approaching the pitch count limit, allowing 1 run on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Copp threw a clean final inning, giving up 1 hit.
