In their second game in as many nights, Wellsboro's boys basketball team defeated Cowanesque Valley 60-35 on Thursday, January 18.
The Hornets controlled the game from start to finish and jumped out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter. Cowanesque closed the lead down to 10 points at the half, however Wellsboro opened back up the lead to 14, 44-30, after the 3rd quarter. Wellsboro then held the Indians to just 5 points in the 4th quarter.
Three Hornets scored in double figures on the evening, led by senior Hayes Campbell and sophomore Luke Rothermel, who combined for half of the Hornets' points, scoring 15 each. Campbell also recorded a double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds. Senior Caden Smith pitched in 10 points, senior Ian Hoose added 9, junior Mitchel Lechler scored 7, and sophomores Jonathan Carl and Marek Mascho added two points each.
Smith grabbed 5 rebounds and made 7 assists, Hoose grabbed 3 rebounds and had 3 assists, Carl and Rothermel grabbed 3 boards each, and Lechler had 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
Fletcher Good had 12 points to lead the Indians.
Wellsboro swept the evening, also winning the JV game, 39-29. Mascho had 9 points and junior Lucas Cuneo added 8 points.
Wellsboro improves to 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the NTL Large School Division following the win. Next up for the Hornets, a date with undefeated Troy (12-0, 8-0 NTL Large School Division) Saturday afternoon.
