A first half goal by senior Lucas Cuneo gave the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team a 1-0 shutout victory over Montoursville in the District IV Class 2A Quarterfinals at Loyalsock on Saturday, October 26.
Cuneo scored on a header with 16.9 seconds remaining in the opening half off a corner kick from senior Alex Citrino. The score remained that way as junior Camden Tom recorded his 8th clean sheet of the season with 4 saves.
Wellsboro took 8 shots on goal and held the Warriors to just 5 shots. Montoursville had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"We were much more ambitious moving forward and more than doubled our shots on goal since our match with Montoursville a few weeks ago," head coach Todd Fitch said. "We also capitalized on a set piece just before the half, which proved to be the game winner. When we didn’t have possession, we cut their looks at goal and Camden came up big on four strikes keeping a clean sheet. The boys put together a complete game tonight and I am very proud of their resolve and execution!"
Wellsboro (15-4) will take on top-seed Lewisburg on Tuesday, October 29 at a site and time yet to be determined.
