A 19-point 4th quarter by Wellsboro led the Hornets to their first win of the 2024 season, a 45-36 NTL cross-over victory over Sayre, on Thursday, December 12.
The Hornets outscored the Redskins 11-7 to lead after the opening quarter, but were outscored 15-9 in the 2nd and trailed Sayre 22-20 at the half. Both teams scored 6 points each in the 3rd quarter to keep it at a two-point spread heading into the final frame, where the Hornets outscored Sayre 19-8, to pull ahead for their first win.
Senior Mitchel Lechler led all scorers with a game-high 18 points while junior Luke Rothermel added 11 to also finish in double-digits. Junior Jonathan Carl added 6 points, junior Marek Mascho scored 5, sophomore Max Mascho pitched in 3 points, and senior Lucas Cuneo and freshman Griffin Morral rounded out the scoring with a point each. Rothermel added 12 boards, giving him a double-double, Marek Mascho made 5 assists, Lechler pulled down 4 rebounds, Morral added 5 rebounds and an assist, and Carl grabbed 7 rebounds.
Zach Senese (12) and Nick Pellicano (11) led Sayre.
In the JV game Sayre edged the Hornets 44-41, dropping Wellsboro to 1-2 on the season. Sophomore Gideon Lawton had 10 points to lead the Hornets while freshman Kody Enck added 9 and sophomore Colin Fletcher chipped in 8 points.
Wellsboro (1-2, 1-1 NTL Large School Division) travels to Williamson on Tuesday.
