The Wellsboro Junior High Baseball team swept a doubleheader with Cowanesque Valley on Thursday, April 20.
The Hornets won both games 12-5.
In game one the Indians came out of the gate swinging, plating 4 runs to jump out to an early lead. Wellsboro answered back right away in the bottom half of the 1st with 5 runs of their own to take a one-run lead. CV scored a run in the top of the 2nd to knot the game at 5-all, however the Hornets again answered in the bottom half of the inning with 5 more runs, putting them up 10-5, then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the 3rd to close out the game.
The Hornets had 7 hits in the game and were led by a 2-for-3 performance by Syler Pietrzyk. Coen Tennis, Reed Richardson, Griffin Morral, Max Mascho, and Izaya Campbell added the solo hits. Campbell, Morral, and Pietrzyk all had doubles and Pietrzyk also hit a triple and drove in 3 runs. Gabe Cuneo, Campbell (2), Morral, Richardson (2), and Justin Mosher also drove in runs.
In the second game, neither team scored until the bottom of the 3rd when the Indians plated 4 runs to take the game's first lead. The Hornets tied the game up the top of the next inning, then added 8 runs in the top of the 5th to score the win.
Braxton Kerr, Stephen Poirier, Keegan VanZile, Camden Bryant, Ethan Keane, Cooper Jones, and Jonah Waltz combined for Wellsboro's 7 hits in the game with Jones blasting a double and driving in 3 runs. Kerr, Poirier, and Jake Starkweather all drove in a pair of runs while Waltz also drove in a run.
The Hornets improve to 5-1 and host Troy on Monday, April 24.
