The Wellsboro Lady Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak as they held on for a 40-37 win over Williamson on Wednesday, January 4.
"It was great to get back on track with a team win," head coach Darrell Morris said. "It was a game of runs and we did a lot of things well, along with some untimely mistakes, but our girls battled through it and found a way to hold on. It was a great game for both teams and the fans."
The entire contest was neck-and-neck from start to finish as both teams were tied at 9 after the 1st quarter, 19 at halftime, and 27 after three quarters of play. Wellsboro outscored Williamsom 13-10 in the final frame to secure the win. One thing that helped the Lady Hornets was their foul shooting. They shot 13-for-18 (0.722) compared to the Lady Warriors' 19-of-33 (0.576).
Sophomore Paige Logsdon recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 22 points and grabbing 18 rebounds (14 defensive), to lead Wellsboro. She also went 6-for-8 from the foul line.
Sophomore Chloe Brandenburg finished in double figures with 10 points and 7 assists, junior Maddy Mascho added 4 points, and senior Hailie Kerr and junior Emily Richardson pitched in two points each. Mascho added 3 steals and 2 assists, Richardson had 2 steals, and senior Ella Posada had 2 steals. Kerr grabbed 5 boards and junior Olivia Chilson and Mascho each secured 4 rebounds.
Wellsboro won the JV game 23-10 to score their first win of the season. Richardson led the way with 7 points, Chilson added 6, and junior Hannah Gilmour finished with 4.
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back in action on Saturday afternoon at Hughesville.
