The Wellsboro Junior High Baseball team started their season on Thursday, April 13 by winning a doubleheader with Sayre.
The Hornets won the first game 13-1 then held on in the second to win 6-5.
In game one Wellsboro scored 13 unanswered runs after the Redskins plated one in the top of the first. The Hornets added 5 in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, and two each in the 3rd and 4th innings to claim the win.
Griffin Morral went 3-for-4 with a double, 2 RBIs and scored 3 runs. Syler Pietrzyk, Coen Tennis, and Justin Mosher were all 2-for-3, Gabe Cuneo was 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs, and RJ Doughtie was 1-for-1 with 2 RBIs. Pietrzyk drove in 3 runs and scored twice, Tennis drove in 2 runs and scored twice, and Mosher knocked in a run and scored twice.
Max Mascho started and pitched 3 innings, allowing just the one run on 0 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Morral came on in relief for an inning, striking out 2 and walking one.
In game two the Hornets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the 2nd inning, and added another run in the top of the third. Sayre rallied to scored 5 unanswered runs, 2 in both the 3rd and 4th innings, and one in the 5th, but the Hornet defense held.
Wellsboro had just one hit in the second game, a double by Wes Starkweather that scored two runs, but drew 11 walks. Braxton Kerr, Starkweather, Kody Enck (2), and Jake Starkweather all scored while Kerr and Kaynan Holler also drove in runs. Jake Starkweather started and threw two innings, striking out 4 and walking 3. Cuneo, Pietrzyk, and Doughtie also got one inning of work in on the mound. Cuneo gave up 2 runs on two hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts, Pietrzyk surrendered a pair of runs with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts, and Doughtie gave up a run with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (2-0) is back at home on Monday, April 17 against Northeast Bradford.
