The Wellsboro Junior High Baseball team swept at doubleheader at Towanda on Wednesday, May 10.
Wellsboro edged the Black Knights 4-3 in game one and followed it up with a 7-4 win in game two.
In the first game the Hornets scored an early run in the top of the 1st, only to have Towanda plate two runs in the 3rd. Wellsboro, however, rallied with a 3-run 5th inning to go up 4-2, then hang on as the Black Knights scored one run in the bottom half of the inning.
Wellsboro belted 8 hits in the game, led by Coen Tennis' 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Tennis hit two doubles and a triple and scored two runs. Max Mascho, Gabe Cuneo, Griffin Morral, Syler Pietrzyk, and Justin Mosher combined for the other 4 hits. Morral drove in two runs and scored once and Mosher also drove in a pair of runs. Pietrzyk also scored in the game.
Pietrzyk started and pitched 3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Mascho finished the game, allowing 1 run on one hit with a walk and 3 strikeouts.
In game two the Hornets rallied from trailing 4-0 after the second inning with a three-run 3rd and 4-run 4th to secure the win.
Jacob Smith went 2-for-2 at the plate with 3 RBIs to lead Wellsboro while Logan Johnson, Matthew Robbins, Eoin Duffy, Dylan Tomlinson, and Jordan Hines contributed hits. Duffy and Tomlinson drove in runs and Johnson, Robbins, Smith (2), Duffy, Tomlinson, and Hines all scored.
RJ Doughtie threw the first two innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and a strikeout. Morral came on in relief, throwing a no-hitter while walking one and striking out 4.
Wellsboro improves to 10-4 after the sweep, and returns to action Monday at North Penn-Mansfield.
