The Wellsboro Junior High Boys Basketball team weathered a slow start, and held off a late rally by North Penn-Liberty to win their 7th straight game, 30-21.
After being held scoreless for almost the entirety of the opening quarter, the young Hornets cut into Liberty's 4-0 lead with a buzzer-beating three by Luke Szentesy. Szentesy scored the Hornets' first 9 points on the night to help Wellsboro go on an 11-4 run in the second half for a 14-8 lead at the half.
Wellsboro outscored the Mounties 7-5 in the 3rd and survived Liberty cutting Wellsboro's lead down to 24-21 late in the game to score the win.
Szentesy led all scorers with 14 points while Griffin Morral added 9. Ransom Schultz scored 3 points and RJ Doughtie and James Doughtie chipped in with 2 points apiece. Morall and Schultz grabbed 7 and 6 rebounds, respectively and Szentesy added 4 boards. Morral finished with 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, and Reed Richardson and Szentesy added 2 steals each. Tanner Allen and also added an assist.
In the B game the Hornets won 29-6. Keegan VanZile led Wellsboro with 10 points and Maddon Mascho pitched in 7.
The team is back in action on Saturday at Northeast Bradford.
