Athens (5-0) scored six runs in the 6th inning to rally for a 7-2 win and remain undefeated on Tuesday, April 11.
The Wildcats took the early lead with a run in the 2nd. Lucas Kraft started the inning with a double then later scored on a Carson Smith single. Athens held onto the lead until the 5th when the Hornets scored twice to take the lead.
With one out sophomore Gabe Sprouse reached base on an error. Sophomore Lucas Cuneo singled in the next at bat while sophomore Alec Magli hit into a fielders choice. Junior Caden Smith singled to score Sprouse to make it 2-1, then back-to-back walks by seniors Conner Adams and Cameron Brought scored Magli (on Brought's walk), tying the game up at 2-all.
Athens' offense lit up in the top of the 6th. Starting out with a single by Caleb Nichols and double from Cameron Sullivan, Mason Lister ripped a double down the third baseline to break the tie and put the Wildcats in front. Lister, Kraft, Jaren Glisson, and Nick Grazul also scored in the inning, giving the Wildcats a 7-2 lead. Wellsboro was then retired in order in both the 6th and 7th innings.
Athens held Wellsboro to just three hits on the afternoon, one each by Smith, Brought, and Cuneo.
Freshman Marek Mascho was credited with the loss as he went 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits with a strikeout. Brought came on in relief, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
The loss drops the Hornets to 4-3 (?) on the year. The team is back in action tomorrow at home against Hughesville.
