The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team came up on the losing end of a 42-40 NTL Large School Division game at Towanda on Wednesday, December 20.
Wellsboro trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, but held the Black Knights to just two points in the second quarter to pull with two points, 17-15 at halftime. Towanda came out of intermission and outscored the Hornets 16-13 to increase the lead back to five heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hornets outscored the Black Knights 12-9 over the final 8 minutes, but came up short.
Senior Hayes Campbell led the team with 17 points and 9 rebounds, senior Ian Hoose added 9 points, sophomore Luke Rothermel finished with 8, and senior Caden Smith chipped in 6 points and 5 assists. Rothermel pulled down 6 rebounds, junior Mitchel Lechler added 2 assists and 2 steals, and Hoose also grabbed two rebounds.
Teagan Irish matched Campbell's 17 points to lead Towanda and Bailey Poll added 14.
Wellsboro won the JV game, 26-17, to improve to 5-1. Freshman Ethan Keane led the team with 10 points and sophomore Jonathan Carl added 6.
The loss drops the Hornets to 3-3 (3-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back on the court on December 27 against South Williamsport.
