Hornets Earn Pair Of Wins Over Athens, Canton

The Wellsboro Boys Track team improved to 3-0 on the season after picking up a pair of wins over Athens and Canton on Tuesday, April 4.

Wellsboro beat Canton 114-34 and Athens 99-51.

"The boys keep improving and encouraging each other," head coach Jill Gastrock exclaimed. "Tonight's meet was a collective effort, and I was proud of all the teams showing great sportsmanship toward all athletes, both teammates and opponents."

Sophomore Micah Vickery won the 110m hurdles (17.3) and the 300m hurdles (45.7), junior Dillion Boyce (11.7), sophomore Jack Bryant (11.9) and freshman Jacoby Strange (12.3) were 2nd-4th in the 100m, freshman Max Macias (5:13.8) won the 1600m, freshman Jonathan Carl (55.2) and sophomore Micaiah Fitch (1:00.2) were 1st and 2nd in the 400m, freshman Jude Cueno (2:18.0) won the 800m, and Boyce (24.9) and Bryant (25.6) were 2nd and 3rd in the 200m.

Freshman Henry Whitney (13:10.4) was 3rd in the 3200m, senior Wyatt Gastrock (104-ft, 8) was 3rd in the discus, senior Aiden Gehman (18-ft, 5) won the long jump followed by Fitch (18-ft, 3) and Boyce (17-ft, 10), Gehman (37-ft, 9) and senior Aden Tom (33-ft, 2) took 1st and 2nd in the triple jump, Gehman, senior Kyle Mosher, and Vickery all hit 5-ft, 8-in in the high jump, and Wellsboro swept the pole vault with sophomore Gabe Carpenter senior Spencer Wetzel hitting 9-ft, 6-in and River Moyer finishing 3rd at 7-ft.

Junior Noah Morey was 4th in the javelin (125-ft, 3) followed by junior Watson Feil (125-ft), and Gastrock (121-ft).

Wellsboro won the 4x100m (47.4) and the 4x400m (3:59.4) relays and was 2nd int the 4x800m (9:55.4).

"We're happy to have respectable representation from all grade levels," continued Gastrock. "Freshmen demonstrating big wins on the track: Macias edging out Athens in the mile and Cuneo edging out Athens in the 800m in the last few strides of the race increased the excitement until the very end of the events. Carl PR'd in the 400m and contributed to a spacious lead in the final event, 4x400m. We swept the jumps and pole vault. Throwing competition was tough, but we still came away with some points there."

Wellsboro returns to action next Tuesday at home against Wyalusing.
