The Wellsboro Girls Soccer teams each swept Port Allegany in non-league play on Tuesday, September 6.
After a scoreless first half Wellsboro struck 5 minutes into the second half on a shot by senior Jordyn Abernathy. Wellsboro then held on the rest of the way to secure the shut out.
Sophomore Annie Gehman made 8 saves in goal for the clean sheet.
Wellsboro out shot Port Allegany 14-7 and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Wellsboro also won the JV game, shutting out Port Allegany 3-0. Freshman Grace Wheatley scored in the first half while freshman Emily Benjamin and junior Emma Elkin added goals in the second half. The Lady Hornets took 4 shots on goal and held the Lady Gators to 0.
"The girls have been working on making connecting passes in space and traveling as the ball travels, which paid off tonight," first year head coach Jason Gehman said. "Their discipline to hold space and shape gave us a lot of opportunities for shots and thankfully one found the back of the net. Our Keeper had a shutout in goal after taking an aggressive posture of coming out to challenge anything in the box that made it through our solid defensive line. JV followed up the Varsity win with a win of their own. As their coach, I could not be more proud of how the girls played and it lead to a win tonight."
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 2-1 (1-0 NTL). The team is back in action on Saturday, September 10 against Troy.
