The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated rival North Penn-Mansfield 40-25 on Thursday, January 13 to snap a 5-game losing streak.
The win is their first win in the 2022 calendar year.
Wellsboro's offense was clicking early as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead after the opening quarter and extended it to a 22-9 halftime lead. North Penn-Mansfield, however, came alive in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Hornets 13-11 to cut the lead to 11 at 33-22 after the third.
The fourth quarter was low scoring for both teams. Wellsboro again held the Lady Tigers to three points, to go on for the win.
Two Lady Hornets scored in double-figures on the evening, with 11 points coming from both senior Emma Coolidge and freshman Chloe Brandenburg. Freshman Paige Logsdon added 8, senior Emma Brandenburg finished with 6, and junior Ella Posada and sophomore Maddy Mascho chipped in with two points each.
Payton Chapel led all scorers with 18 points on the night.
North Penn-Mansfield won a low-scoring JV game 16-13. Sophomore Emily Morris led Wellsboro with 6 points while Addison Hill matched that total for the Lady Tigers.
Wellsboro improves to 5-6 overall (4-3 NTL Large School Division) while North Penn-Mansfield falls to 4-8 (3-4 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday, January 18 at home against Wyalusing.
