The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team withstood a 27-point performance by Sayre's Dom Fabbri to hang on to defeat the Redskins 62-56 on Friday, January 21.
"We made our foul shots at the end when we needed to," head coach Steve Adams said.
The entire game was neck-and-neck as the Hornets only held a one-point lead after the 1st (13-12), a two-point lead at halftime (29-27), and a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter (44-41). Wellsboro outscored Sayre 18-15 in the game's final eight minutes going 9-for-10 at the foul line to ice it.
Fabbri led all scorers on the night and Jackson Hubbard added 13 for the Redskins.
Wellsboro got 20 points out of senior Liam Manning and 18 from junior Peyton McClure. Senior Darryn Callahan and junior Conner Adams added 8 points each, sophomore Hayes Campbell finished with 7, and junior Cameron Brought chipped in with a point. Manning also grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double, Adams had 7 assists and 4 steals, and Callahan and Campbell each grabbed 5 rebounds.
In the JV game the Hornets held on for a one-point, 28-27, win to break a two-game losing streak. Sophomore Caden Smith led Wellsboro with 13 points.
The win improves the Hornets to 10-2 (8-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday, January 25 at home against Northeast Bradford.
