The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams each came home with wins on the road at Cowanesque Valley on Tuesday, February 23.
In the girls game the young Lady Hornets held off CV to win 25-22 in the A game. Wellsboro trailed 6-5 after the 1st quarter and 12-11 at halftime, but went on an 8-2 run in the third to take the lead and hold on for the win. Chloe Brandenburg led the way for Wellsboro scoring 17 points, while LeAnna Fuentes scored 4 points and Paige Logsdon and Raegan Watkins-Bourret added two points each.
Wellsboro's B team also won on the evening, 15-13, scoring the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds remaining.
"CV was a very quick team, but we adjusted and played good team defense," said head coach Janelle Tombs. "It is always nice to come away with a win on the road."
In the boys game the Hornets defeated CV 57-35. Wellsboro jumped out to a quick 19-8 lead after one quarter and led 32-22 at the half. Wellsboro then outscored Cowanesque 25-13 the rest of the way to secure the victory.
"It's a small gym, so there was a lot of transition basketball," head coach Kyle Smith said. "I was pleased with the way we moved the basketball and the defensive effort improved greatly in the second half," said Coach Kyle Smith. "Overall, I was happy with the determination and effort by the boys tonight."
Micaiah Fitch paced the Hornets with 19 points, Mitchel Lechler poured in 14 points, Micah Vickery scored 12 points, EJ Keck and Owen Stevens each had 5 points and Jonathan Carl added 2.
Wellsboro won the B game 46-9 behind a balanced scoring attack. Marek Mascho, Braeden Abernathy and Luke Rothermel all scored 8 points. Drayden McGee and Jonathan Carl each scored 6.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday, February 27 at North Penn-Mansfield
