The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams split with Troy on Saturday, December 11.
In the boys game the Hornets beat Troy 33-14. The Hornets led 12-1 after the first quarter and 17-7 at halftime. Wellsboro extended their lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Trojans 9-4 and again in the fourth quarter with a 7-3 advantage for the win.
"The boys have played great defense lately and are making our opponents take contested shots," said coach Kyle Smith. "If we can keep up this type of defensive effort for the rest of the season, we can be difficult to play against."
Jonathan Carl led the Hornets with 10 points, Aaron Kirk scored 9 points, Drayden McGee scored 6 points, Maxwell Mascho scored 4 points, Luke Rothermel scored 2 points and Jacob Baldwin scored 2 points.
The Wellsboro B Team won 15-13. Gideon Lawton scored 9 points, Maxwell Mascho scored 4 points and Marek Mascho added 2 points.
In the girls game Troy defeated Wellsboro 32-9. Troy led 5-2 after the opening quarter and pushed their lead to 12-2 at halftime. In the second half they outscored the young Lady Hornets 20-7.
"Wellsboro's struggles to score continue," head coach Janelle Tombs said. "Troy came out in the third quarter and could not miss. We had good looks they just did not fall. The girls hustled the entire fast paced game."
Both teams are back in action on Saturday, December 18 against Athens.
