The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team split a pair of game on Friday and Saturday to finish as the runner up at the Muncy Rotary Tournament.
On Friday night the Lady Hornets beat Benton 41-21 to reach the championship game against host Muncy. After a slow 3-2 start that found Wellsboro trailing early, they tied up Benton at 10-all at halftime then went on to outscore them 31-11 in the second half to secure the win.
Senior Emma Coolidge and freshman Chloe Brandenburg led Wellsboro with 14 points and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Maddy Mascho scored 7, freshman Paige Logsdon had 6, and senior Emma Brandenburg chipped in 4. Coolidge also finished with 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Logsdon also added 8 assists and 9 rebounds.
In Saturday's championship game against Muncy, the Lady Hornets were edged 34-32. Wellsboro had an 11-4 lead after the first quarter and a 17-15 lead at the half. Wellsboro increased their lead to 24-21 before the Lady Indians outscored the Lady Hornets 13-8 in the final frame.
"We just ran out of steam in the end," head coach John Davis said.
Logsdon and Chloe Brandenburg both scored 8 points to lead Wellsboro. Coolidge finished with 6 points, Emma Brandenburg had 5, junior Ella Posada chipped in 3, and Mascho rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Logsdon added 13 rebounds.
In JV action Wellsboro beat Muncy 34-18 on Saturday led by 14 points from sophomore Emily Morris.
Wellsboro (1-1) kicks off league play at Cowanesque Valley on Wednesday, December 15.
