In their first game of the 2020-21 season, the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team suffered a one-point loss on the road to Athens on Friday, January 15.
"We played hard but didn't do a very good job tonight of finishing the game," head coach Steve Adams said. "We will learn from this and move forward."
The Hornets trailed the Wildcats 9-8 after the opening frame then went on to outscore the Wildcats 13-8 in the second quarter to build a 21-17 lead at the half. The Hornets increased their lead to 35-27 after again outscoring the Wildcats 14-10 in the third. Trailing late, Athens began to chip away at a 16-point Wellsboro lead to win, 54-53.
Junior Isaac Keane led Wellsboro with 15 points, junior Liam Manning had 14, and junior Darryn Callahan and sophomore Peyton McClure added 11 points each. Sophomore Conner Adams rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
Adams made 7 assists on the evening while Manning and Keane grabbed 13 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Athens' Mason Lister led all scorers with 16 points.
In the JV game the Hornets won 35-33 in double overtime. Freshman Caden Smith led the team with 13 points, freshman Hayes Campbell had 11, and sophomore Cameron Brought added 10.
Wellsboro (0-1, 0-1 NTL Large School Division) travels to Canton on Monday, January 18.
