The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 55-53 loss in the final seconds to Wyalusing on Saturday, January 25.
"It was a tough loss but the boys never gave up and fought to the end," said head coach Steve Adams.
Wellsboro trailed 14-12 after the 1st quarter and found themselves down 3, 25-22, at halftime. Wyalusing maintained the lead after outscoring the Hornets 15-10 in the 3rd, but Wellsboro made a run late in the 4th quarter. As the Rams built a 10-point lead, Wellsboro rallied to tie the game up late at 53-all. The Rams' Mitchell Burke then hit the game's winning foul shots late, to give the Rams the win and sweep the season series with Wellsboro.
Three Hornets were in double figures in the score book led by junior Joseph Grab with 17, sophomore Liam Manning had 12, and freshman Conner Adams finished with 11. Senior Ty Morral added 5 off the bench, senior Daniel Mitchell pitched in 4, and sophomores Isaac Keane and Darryn Callahan had 2 points each.
Burke led all scorers with 21.
Wellsboro started the afternoon off with a 42-30 win in the JV game, led by sophomore Ryan Sweet with 16 points.
The loss drops the Hornets' record to 10-8 (7-5 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday, January 28 as they host Athens.
