The Wyalusing Lady Rams held the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team to just 24 points in a 46-24 loss on Thursday, January 18.
The first quarter was neck and neck as the Lady Rams edged Wellsboro 8-7 and Wellsboro proceeded to keep the game close in the second. Wyalusing edged them with a 10-8 quarter putting them up 18-15 at halftime, but things completely fell apart in the third for Wellsboro.
Wyalusing held the Lady Hornets scoreless in the third quarter going on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 27-15. The only other time this year the Lady Hornets were held scoreless in a quarter was against Danville back on December 29. Wellsboro found the bottom of the net in the fourth quarter but were outscored 19-9.
Emily Champluvier (15) and Callie Bennett (14) combined for 29 points to lead Wyalusing.
Senior Emma Poirier scored 9 to lead Wellsboro while junior Cathryn Brought had 7, sophomore Jena Boyce scored 4, and senior Heidi Zuchowski and junior Liza Manning added 2 points each.
Wellsboro won the JV game, 43-28, to start the night behind 13 points from freshman Abbye Cavanaugh. The JV squad is now 5-6 on the year.
The loss in the Varsity game drops the Lady Hornets to 6-8 overall and 6-3 in the NTL Large School Division. The girls are back in action at Williamson on Wednesday, January 23.
