The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams scored a pair of wins over Williamson on Tuesday, December 10.
In the boys game Wellsboro won 45-24. The Hornets jumped out to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 31-11 at halftime. Despite being outscored 9-5 in a sluggish third quarter, the Hornets returned the favor in the fourth by out-scoring Williamson 9-4 to secure the win.
"It was important to get off to a quick start and the first half set the tone for tonight's game," said head coach Kyle Smith. "It was also encouraging to get contributions from a number of different players tonight. We will need secondary scoring the rest of the season as well."
Hayes Campbell led the hornets with 16 points, Tyler Youells added 14 points, Julian Mann and Caden Smith scored 5 points each, Carter Knowlton scored 3 points and E.J. Keck added 2 points.
Wellsboro also won the B game, 16-2. E.J. Keck and Micah Vickery each scored 4 points to lead the Hornets. Mitchell Lechler, Fisher Cushing, Davin Boyden and Blake Solow all scored 2 points each.
In the game game Wellsboro won 25-12. The young Lady Hornets led 11-2 after the first quarter, 13-4 at halftime, and 17-9 after the third quarter.
"Our girls really played with intensity and passion tonight, which was great to see against a talented Williamson team," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We also made 9 of 14 free throws, which has been a focal point for us in practices the last few weeks, and it was exciting to see the girls step up and finish at the line."
Chloe Brandenburg had 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal, Maddy Mascho had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist, Emily Richardson had 4 points and 1 steal, Emily Morris (4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 1 assist) and Hannah Gilmour (1 rebound) each added 2 points, Paige Logsdon grabbed 7 rebounds and had 1 steal, Hannalee Cleveland added 1 rebound, and Emily Pierce added 1 steal.
Wellsboro's B team also won 17-12. Chloe Brandenburg had 9 points, Lexi Fillmore had 4 points, and Abby Owlett and Emily Pierce each chipped in with 2 points.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday, December 12 at Athens.
