The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams split a pair of games with Troy on Wednesday, December 4.
In the girls game Wellsboro won 26-17. The young Lady Hornets head slim 6-4 and 14-12 leads after the first 2 quarters, then went on a 10-2 run in the third quarter to put some distance between them and Troy.
"We had a tight game early against a good Troy team," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We made some defensive adjustments at halftime and our girls really executed well in the second half."
Maddie Mascho had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists, Chloe Brandenburg had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist, Emily Morris (7 steals, 2 rebounds, 1 assist), Paige Logsdon (7 rebounds, 3 steals), Hannalee Cleveland (2 rebounds, 1 steal), and Emily Pierce (2 rebounds) each added 2 points.
Hannah Gilmour had 3 rebounds and 1 assist, while Olivia Chilson grabbed 2 rebounds and Emily Richardson had 2 steals.
Wellsboro also won the B game, 20-13. Chloe Brandenburg had 8 points and Paige Logsdon added 6 points. Eva Anderson, Abby Owlett, Emily Pierce each chipped in with 2 points.
In the boys game Wellsboro lost to Troy 25-22. Hayes Campbell scored 10 points to lead the Hornets on the scoresheet. Caden Smith added 7 points, Ian Hoose scored 3 points and Tyler Youells scored 2.
"I thought we certainly played well enough to win the game, but it didn't go our way tonight," head coach Kyle Smith said. "We knew Troy would use a full court press and I thought we handled it well overall. We spent a lot of time with our press break offense and although we turned the ball over a few times, it didn't have a huge impact on the game. Getting timely shots in high pressure situations is a struggle for us right now, however, I'm confident that as the boys continue to play, they will respond positively to challenging situations."
The B team also lost 32-12. E.J. Keck and Micah Vickery each scored 5 points to lead the hornets. Owen Stevens added a pair of foul shots to round out the scoring.
Both teams are back in action this evening at Canton.
