The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams split a pair of games on the road in Athens on Thursday, December 12.
In the girls game Wellsboro won 18-9 for their 11th win of the year. After trailing 6-5 at halftime, the young Lady Hornets went on an 8-1 run in the third quarter, and 13-2 run in the second half, to pull out the win.
"Our girls played with great intensity the whole game," said head coach Darrell Morris. "After the first quarter I told the girls if they relax a little on offense and keep the intensity up on defense we will do well. We really played great the second half. I am so proud of our team."
Emily Richardson (1 rebound), Olivia Chilson (4 rebounds), and Chloe Brandenburg (5 rebounds, 1 assist) had 4 points each, Emily Morris (6 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist), Maddy Mascho (3 rebounds, 1 steal), and Paige Logsdon (6 rebounds, 1 steal) each had 2 points.
Hannalee Cleveland and Hannah Gilmour each had 1 rebound.
Wellsboro also won the B game, 17-11. Emily Pierce had 6 points, Cassi Mitchell added 5 points, while Abby Owlett, Lexi Fillmore, and Maddie Losinger each added 2 points.
The boys team lost to Athens 48-25. Caden Smith scored 9 points to lead the Hornets, Hayes Campbell had 8 points, Julian Mann scored 3 points, Ian Hoose and Carter Knowlton scored 2 points each and Watson Feil added 1 point.
"Tonight wasn't our night. Credit goes to Athens for being ready to play from the start. Their pressure made it difficult for us to do much offensively," said head coach Kyle Smith. "Hopefully we will put this behind us, regroup quickly and finish out the last week on a positive note."
Both teams are back in action on Saturday, December 14 at Cowanesque Valley.
