The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams started the 2019 season with a pair of wins over Towanda on Monday, November 4.
In the girls game the Lady Hornets A team won 21-8. Wellsboro held a slim 2-1 lead after the 1st quarter, grew their lead to 8-3 at halftime, then led 17-3 after the 3rd quarter.
Maddy Mascho had 8 points , 8 rebounds, 7 steals, and 1 assist, Chloe Brandenburg (2 steals) chipped in with 4 points, while Olivia Chilson (3 rebounds, 3 steals) added 3 points.
Emily Morris (2 rebounds, 1 assist), Emily Pierce (3 rebounds), and Paige Logsdon (6 rebounds) added 2 points each. Hannalee Cleveland grabbed 4 rebounds, and Hannah Gilmour and Emily Richardson added 1 rebound and 1 steal each.
"We definitely had the first game jitters and missed so many easy buckets early on despite moving the ball pretty well," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We did have a nice run in the 3rd quarter to open up the game some."
Wellsboro also won the B game, 21-11. Chloe Brandenburg had 9 points, Paige Logsdon and Emily Pierce added 4 points each, while Cassi Mitchell and Lexi Fillmore chipped in 2 points each.
The Middle School boys team opened the season with a 32-21 win against Towanda. After holding a slim 14-13 lead at halftime, the Hornets turned up the defensive pressure and pulled away in the second half
Hayes Campbell led the hornets with 15 points. Caden Smith and Tyler Youells added 6 points each, Julian Mann had 3, and Watson Feil scored 2 points to round out the scoring.
The B team lost a close 19-18 game with Micaiah Fitch scoring 6 points, Mitchel Lechler with 5, Micah Vickery with 4, and EJ Keck scored 3 points.
Both teams travel to Northeast Bradford on Wednesday, November 6.
