The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team held Canton to just 16 total points to collect their fourth win of the season on Tuesday, January 8.
Despite making only two field goals the Lady Hornets' limited Canton to just 3 points (all from the foul line) to lead 6-3 after the first. Wellsboro outscored Canton 12-9 in the second quarter to take an 18-12 lead at halftime, but did all of their damage in the third and fourth quarters.
The Lady Hornets put up 17 points in the third and 11 in the fourth while holding Canton to just 4 points the remainder of the game.
Senior Emma Poirier led all scorers with 19 points. Junior Cathryn Brought scored a career-high 15 points, junior Liza Manning had 6, and sophomores Jena Boyce and Bailey Monks, and senior Heidi Zuchowski scored 2 points each.
Brought, Manning, and Poirier grabbed 4 rebounds each, and Brought also added 4 assists and 7 steals. Boyce added 6 assists and 3 rebounds.
In the JV game the Lady Hornets won 25-13. Freshman Emma Coolidge had 12 points.
Wellsboro (4-6, 4-1 NTL Large School Division) have won 4 of their last six games since their 0-4 start. The team will be back on the court on Thursday, January 10 against Cowanesque Valley.
