Despite a career-high afternoon from senior Emma Poirier the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team was edged by Jersey Shore, 59-50 on Saturday, January 5.
"I'm really proud of the girls," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "They have come along way since game one. Jersey shore played us a triangle and two and a box and one. The girls fought hard and made the necessary adjustments needed throughout the game. Foul trouble and turnovers hurt us today."
The first quarter was a low-scoing one as the Lady Bulldogs held a slim 6-5 lead over the Lady Hornets after the opening 8 minutes, but went on a 22-8 run in the second quarter to lead 28-13 at halftime.
Wellsboro though wouldn't go down without a fight. The Lady Hornets battled back to start the third quarter and outscored Jersey Shore 19-15 to trail 43-32 entering the final frame. Again Wellsboro outscored Shore 18-16 in the quarter, but were unable to pull closer.
Poirier led all scorers with a game-high 28 points, but unlike Jersey Shore (who had 3 girls in double-figures), only junior Cathryn Brought cracked double-digits with 10 points. Junior Liza Manning had 6 points while senior Dani Hunt, senior Heidi Zuchowski, and sophomore Bailey Monks added 2 points each.
Sophomore Jena Boyce had 3 assists and 2 steals, Brought added 2 steals, Hunt had 2 assists, Manning had 8 rebounds, and Poirier and Zuchowski had 4 rebounds each.
Jersey Shore started the afternoon by edging Wellsboro 23-21 in the JV game. Lindsey Marmara and Emma Coolidge had 5 points each.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 3-6 overall. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 8 on the road in Canton.
