Senior Emma Poirier scored a career-high 27 points to help the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team defeat Northeast Bradford 44-39 on Thursday, December 20.
The win was the Lady Hornets' second in a row after dropping their first four games of the season.
NEB held a slim 6-4 lead after the first quarter but the Lady Hornets went on a 14-11 run in the second quarter to lead 18-17 at halftime. Poirier and junior Liza Manning scored 6 points each to lead Wellsboro to a 12-9 quarter and 30-26 lead. NEB mounted a comeback in the fourth but Poirier scored 8 of the Lady Hornets' 14 points to hold on for the win.
In addition to Poirier's 27 points, which moves her past the 600-point career plateau, Manning finished with 6 points, sophomore Jena Boyce had 4, junior Cathryn Brought added 3, and senior Heidi Zuchowski and sophomore Bailey Monks rounded out the scoring with 2 points each. Brought added 10 rebounds to her point total, Zuchowski grabbed 6 rebounds, Poirier had 5 steals and an assist, and Monks and Manning grabbed 4 rebounds each.
NEB won the JV game 49-20. Freshman Lindsey Marmara scored 11 points to lead Wellsboro.
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 2-4 (2-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Saturday, December 29 at Danville.
