The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams picked up season-opening victories at Canton on Saturday, November 10.
The boys A team won 30-13 and the B team won 22-20.
Wellsboro led 6-3 at the end of the first then extended their lead to 12-7 at halftime behind 10 points from Conner Adams. In the second half Wellsboro turned up the defensive intensity and led 22-11 after 3 behind 6 points by Will Kibler. Wellsboro continued to play strong defense to secure the win 30-17.
Adams led all scores with 12 points, Kibler had 9, Cameron Brought socred 4, Caden Smith and Peyton McClure scored 2 each, and Spencer Wetzel added one point.
Ian Hoose led the B team with 7 points.
"It was a good start to the season," said head coach Steve Adams. "We have a lot of areas to improve in but our effort was solid."
The girls A team won 24-11 and the B team lost 17-11. After a 2-2 first quarter the Lady Hornets outscored Canton 4-2 to end the half with a 10-6 lead, then extended it to 20-7 after three quarters. Madeline Mascho had 8 points, Kambri Cleveland, Rylie Boyce (4 steals, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), and Ella Posada (8 rebounds) had 4 points each. Jordyn Abernathy and Molly Ingerick added 2 points each.
Emily Richardson had 6 points, Emily Morris had 3 points, and Emily Pierce added 2 points in the B game.
"The girls played well today and gave a great effort," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We had the typical first game nervousness and missed some easy shots, but overall we played well."
Both teams are on the road at Cowanesque Valley on Wednesday, November 14.
