The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams dropped a pair of games to Sayre on Saturday, February 10.
In the girls game, the Lady Hornets lost 29-16. Sayre led 8-4 after the first and 6-12 at halftime, then a 9-point third quarter put the game out of reach.
"We had our hands full with an athletic Sayre group," said head coach Darrell Morris. We got outrebounded and had 23 turnovers, but our girls played hard and we are making steady improvements."
Emma Coolidge had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists while Jordyn Abernathy, Emma Brandenburg, Lindsey Marmara, and Emma Pietropola added 2 points each.
There was no B game.
In the boys game the Hornets lost to Sayre 47-39. The Hornets dug themselves a 13-4 hole after the first and trailed 21-12 at the half. Wellsboro was able to cut the Redskins lead down to two points in both the third and fourth quarters, but turnovers did the Hornets in as they fell to 0-2 on the year.
Conner Adams went 6-of-9 from the foul line to lead Wellsboro with 12 points while Liam Manning had 10 and Isaac Keane scored 8.
Wellsboro won the B game 31-18. Ryan Sweet and Peyton McClure both scored 10 points each. Spencer Wetzel added 6.
The teams will both be back in action on Monday, February 12 on the road in Wyalusing.
