Middle School Girls Basketball ends 4-game losing streak

The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team erased their 4-game losing streak by beating Canton 18-12 on Tuesday, December 11 at home.

After trailing 6-4 after the first quarter Wellsboro tied the game up at 10 by halftime then held Canton scoreless in the third quarter, and to just 2 points the entire second half, to lead 14-10 entering the fourth quarter.

Maddie Mascho had 10 points 7 rebounds, and 1 assist; Ella Posada had 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals; Rylie Boyce (3 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist) and Hailie Kerr (6 rebounds, 2 steals) had 2 points each. Jordyn Abernathy had 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist; Kambri Cleveland added 1 rebound and 2 steals; Molly Ingerick had 1 rebound and 1 steal; and Alyssa Bisbing grabbed 1 rebound.

"The girls played a nice game against a solid Canton team," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We changed up our defense at halftime and the girls really did a great job of holding them to 2 points for the second half. Getting Jordyn Abernathy back gave us a nice boost and Maddie Mascho carried us offensively."

The B team also won 20-16. Olivia Chilson and Emily Morris scored 8 and 6 points, respectively. Gillian Hernandez added 4 points and Emily Pierce chipped in with 2 points.

In the boys game, the Hornets picked up their sixth straight win in a 48-15 game. Wellsboro held a slim 6-4 lead after the opening quarter but went on a 19-point tear to lead 25-8 at halftime. The Hornets then outscored Canton 23-7 in the second half.

"This was a total team win as everyone saw floor time and performed well in their roles," coach Steve Adams said.

Conner Adams led with 14 followed by 10 by Peyton McClure.

The Hornet B team also won, edging Canton 28-24. Caden Smith led Wellsboro with 10 points.

Both teams are back in action at Williamson on Saturday, December 15.
