The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team suffered a 6-3 loss to Athens on Wednesday, September 19.
The Lady Wildcats scored two quick first-half goals by Rachel Hutchison and Emma Roe to take an early lead. Wellsboro managed to get on the scoreboard with 18:41 remaining as senior Emma Poirier converted a penalty kick to cut the score to 2-1, but again Athens went on the prowl with two more goals to end the half.
Hutchison scored on a header with 9:40 left to play then Ariana Gambrell scored with 4:15 showing on the clock to put the Lady Wildcats up 4-1 at the break.
13 minutes into the second half Hannah Walker scored to increase the Lady Wildcats' lead to 5-1. Sophomore Kerrah Clymer found the back of the net with just under 10 minutes remaining off an assist from Poirier, but Athens again scored not even a minute later as Hutchison completed her hat trick.
Poirier scored Wellsboro's final goal off an assist from Clymer with 6:31 remaining.
Athens took 23 shots on goal compared to Wellsboro's 6 and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Madison Jocelyn recorded 2 saves for the Lady Wildcats while freshman Lilly Abadi made 16 stops.
Athens also took the JV game 3-1. Wellsboro's lone goal came by sophomore Cara Tennis.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 3-3 (3-2 NTL). The team will be back in action later this afternoon against rival North Penn-Mansfield.
