The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team capped a perfect NTL Large School Division season with a 66-33 win over North Penn-Mansfield on Monday, February 12.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 14-9 lead after the first quarter then turned on the juice as they outscored Mansfield 16-8 in the second to take a 30-17 lead into halftime. Wellsboro then outscored the Lady Tigers 35-15 over the final 16 minutes for their 20th win of the season, a new record for Wellsboro head coach John Davis.
It was also Davis' 75th win of his career.
"It's a good feeling to come through the NTL and take care of business and beat all the NTL teams," Davis said. "Tonight we beat a good Mansfield team who has been playing very well lately. It was a good, solid win tonight."
Senior Lizzie Poirier led the Lady Hornets with a game-high 24 points to move to 939 for her career. Senior Tory Self backed Poirier up with 22 points to reach 462 for the season. Self is now a point away from Carrie Gorda's 1992 total of 463 points for fifth most in Wellsboro Girls Basketball history.
Sophomore Cathryn Brought added 10 points, sophomore Liza Manning scored 6, senior Rachael Tuttle had 3, and senior Mikel Shabloski pitched in with a point.
Self finished with a double-double with 12 steals and had 8 assists, Manning had 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and a blocked shot, Tuttle grabbed 4 rebounds in her second game back from injury, Shabloski had 4 rebounds and 4 steals, and Poirier added 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Wellsboro closed out the JV season with a 33-14 win over North Penn-Mansfield to finish 4-17 overall. Sophomore Georgia Macensky led the Lady Hornets with 11 points.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 20-2 (16-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Thursday, February 15 in the NTL Showdown semi-finals at home against Northeast Bradford.
