The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams pulled off back-to-back sweeps as they defeated Cowanesque Valley on Monday, December 17.
In the girls game the Lady Hornets won 17-5. Wellsboro held a slim 4-2 lead after the opening quarter and was up 6-3 at the half. Wellsboro then pulled away in the third to lead 14-3.
Rylie Boyce (2 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists), Jordyn Abernathy (2 rebounds, 4 steals), and Maddy Mascho (1 rebound, 3 steals) scored 4 points each to lead the Lady Hornets while Ella Posada (5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist) and Kambri Cleveland (3 rebounds) added 2 points each. Hailie Kerr had 1 point and 9 rebounds and Molly Ingerick had 1 rebound, 2 steals, and 1 assist.
Maddie Bordas grabbed 3 rebounds and Alyssa Bisbing had 1 rebound.
Head coach Darrell Morris said, "We had a slow shooting start, but moved the ball well on offense and played great defense again, which has been our strength all year."
The B team lost 14-13 in a game that had several lead changes in the last minute. Olivia Chilson had 8 points, Hannalee Cleveland, and Gillian Hernandez chipped in 2 points each. Emily Morris added 1 point.
In the boys game the Hornets won 44-5 to improve their record to 10-2 on the season.
"We are playing strong basketball right now with everyone contributing," head coach Steve Adams said. "We have 4 games against some good competition coming up this week and next starting with Liberty tomorrow. We are looking forward to the challenges."
Will Kibler led the Hornets with 8 points, Caden Smith and Cameron Brought had 6 points each and Conner Adams added 5 points.
Wellsboro also won the B game 28-15 with Tyler Youells scoring 12 points to lead the team.
The boys team plays at North Penn-Liberty tomorrow night and the girls host North Penn-Liberty on Thursday, December 20.
