The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team rebounded after a loss Saturday with a 9-0 win against Sugar Valley Rural Charter on Monday, April 23.
It took the Hornets until the fourth inning to reach the scoreboard, but they added 5 runs in that inning to put themselves firmly in control of the game. Junior Cam Tennis, senior Caleb Tennis, and sophomore Silas Wagaman all singled and Wagaman drove in Cam Tennis to make it 1-0. Junior Taynton Repard walked and senior Parker Mann singled to score both Caleb Tennis and Wagaman, making it 3-0.
A double by senior Johnny Rowland scored Repard and a walk by Cam Tennis scored Mann for the 5-0 lead.
An inning later Wagaman led off with a single, stole two bases, and then scored to make it 6-0.
Wellsboro's final three runs came in the sixth inning as sophomore Jacob Trowbridge, freshman Zack Rowland, and Wagaman all scored.
The Hornets pounded out 10 hits on the afternoon, lead by Wagaman with a 2-for-3 performance. Senior Dalton Prough, sophomore Lucas Citrino, Rowland, sophomore Billy Lechler, Trowbridge, Cam Tennis, Caleb Tennis, and Mann also added hits.
Repard pitched a complete game, striking out 10 and scattering 4 hits on 82 pitches.
"We started slow tonight which wasn't surprising after an intense game on Saturday," said head coach Philip Prough. "Tate Repard did a superb job pitching. He kept his pitches in the lower half of the zone and threw strikes. Silas hit the ball well and Kaeden Mann did great behind the plate. Both players give us a lot of options for this team. Jake came off the bench and stroked another hard hit. He's improved his swing this year, but not his head first sliding. So that's one area we can improve on. We face a tough Sayre team tomorrow. So we'll have to have our "A" game ready to beat them. It should be a good one."
The win improves the Hornets' record to 6-2 (5-1 NTL Large School Division). The Hornets travel to Sayre tomorrow in an NTL cross-over game.
