The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team upset visiting Loyalsock 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, October 13.
"This was our 4th match of the week and we have some guys nursing some of the effects from the matches," said head coach Todd Fitch. "I think that makes the win even more rewarding. We did not generate a lot of shots but the boys capitalized when given the opportunity. Nate and our back line made sure that our few chances would be enough to put us on top."
The Lancers took the lead with 29 minutes remaining in the first half on a Zach Stopper goal. They held that lead for the remainder of the half and until 7 minutes left in the game. Senior Adam Cornell found senior Brett Rudy, for his 69th career goal and 33rd goal of the season, to tie it up.
As the game went into overtime sophomore Will Poirier found the back of the net, with help from Rudy, to break the tie and give Wellsboro the win, their 13th in a row.
Both teams combined for 10 shots of goal, Loyalsock registered 6 shots and Wellsboro just 4. The Lancers had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Nate Redell returned to the lineup, allowing just the one goal, and making 5 saves.
Loyalsock won the JV game 2-0.
The win improves the Hornets to 13-3 (10-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Monday, October 15 on the road against Athens.
