The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team suffered a 6-5 loss to Shikellamy on Thursday, May 17.
Wellsboro took an early lead as senior Dalton Prough singled, stole a base, then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Carson Davis.
The Hornets held onto their 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when the Braves scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Wellsboro answered back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own to retake the lead. Davis led off the inning with a walk, but was forced out at second as senior Caleb Tennis hit into a fielder's choice. Tennis would later score on a double by junior Taynton Repard. Repard would also score to put Wellsboro back up, 3-2.
Both teams added a run each in the fifth with Prough scoring for Wellsboro on an RBI single by Tennis, however the Braves scored 3 runs in the top of the sixth to lead 6-4. Wellsboro got a run back in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Silas Wagaman crossed home plate on an RBI double by Prough to cut it to 6-5. Wellsboro's bats cooled off after that point and Shikellamy held on for the win.
"A back and forth game. Each team had momentum at different times," head coach Philip Prough said. "They won by one - which is what happens when they make one more play than you. That's baseball."
Prough went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Wellsboro and Repard finished 2-for-4. Davis, Tennis, and Wagaman rounded out the hits. Davis started out on the mound and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with 9 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Repard is credited with the loss after allowing 3 runs in a third of an inning, and Prough closed out the game.
"Carson pitched good but was high in the zone with too many pitches," Prough concluded. "It led to deep counts and hitting the max pitch count after 5 innings. Our bullpen didn't have it's best stuff today and they took advantage. Even so, we still battled and had our chances but didn't execute some plays."
The loss drops the Hornets to 14-4 overall. The team will be back in action tomorrow afternoon on the road at Milton for their final regular season game.
