Wellsboro rally falls short against Wyalusing

A seventh inning rally by the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team came up short in an 8-7 loss to Wyalusing on Wednesday, May 10.

"A disappointing loss tonight," said head coach Philip Prough. "We didn't have good plate approaches, yet still had our chances. Not our best effort. We'll have to shake it off quickly though as we go back at it against Troy tomorrow who has as much to play for as we do. It's gut check time for our boys."

Wyalusing put up 7 runs in the first two innings on Wellsboro errors and three walks. However, the Hornets started making their comeback in the bottom of the second.

Junior Caleb Tennis led off the inning with a walk, junior Brent English had a base hit to move Tennis to second and both would score as junior Johnny Rowland reached on an error by the short stop to make the score 7-2.

Wyalusing added a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 8-2, but the Hornets kept chiseling away at the Rams' lead.

Freshman Carson Davis led off the inning with a base hit and advanced all the way to third on a balk and a wild pitch. A Tennis base hit scored Davis to make it 8-3. Back-to-back walks by English and Rowland loaded the bases, and a second error on the Wyalusing short stop scored both Tennis and English to make it 8-3 before the inning ended.

Junior Dalton Prough and sophomore Cam Tennis led off the sixth with back-to-back singles and both eventually scored to make it 8-7 heading into the seventh inning.

After a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, the Hornets had one final chance to complete the comeback. Rowland was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Prough was intentionally walked with two outs, but the game came to an end on a fly out to center field.

Caleb Tennis and English were both 1-for-3, and Prough, Cam Tennis, Davis, and freshman Billy Lechler were all 1-for-4. Sophomore Taynton Repard, Davis, and Prough all pitched on the evening with Repard taking the loss.

The Hornets are back in action this afternoon against Troy.
