The Wellsboro Middle School Boys Basketball team dropped the opening game of the Kyri Hall Memorial Tournament 44-35 in overtime to Williamsport on Thursday, February 23.
The Hornets jumped out to an early 21-16 lead behind 11 points from Joseph Grab. Both teams went scoreless in the second quarter. Williamsport outscored Wellsboro 14-8 to take a 30-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter, where the Hornets outscored the hosts 6-5 to force overtime.
Williamsport outscored Wellsboro 9-0 in the bonus period, sending the Hornets to the losers bracket.
"I thought the team played awesome we just ran out of gas," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "I was very proud the way they came out and played."
Grab had 15 points to lead the Hornets, Nevin DeCosta scored 10, Isaac Keane had 6, and Darryn Callahan and Zach Singer scored 2 points each. Keane added 11 rebounds and 5 steals, Grab had 5 rebounds and 3 steals, and DeCosta had an assist.
The Hornets will be back in action at 5:45 against the loser of Loyalsock and Danville from Thursday.
