The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated Sayre 11-0 in a downpour on Thursday, September 14.
"The boys played great in tough conditions," said head coach John Shaffer. "We created a lot of chances, 48 in total, even though we only got 27 on net. Their goalie (Camden Wheeler) made some great saves. Our defense also did a great job limiting space and keeping the ball moving. Hopefully we can continue this rhythm on Saturday."
The Hornets came out firing on a cylinders as they scored 8 first half goals. The first came not even five minutes into the game as senior Gabe Leach setup senior Tanner Runyan for an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Kaeden Mann later assisted Leach for a goal before senior Noah Fitch scored unassisted to make it 3-0 midway through the first. Mann then went on a scoring spree and collected a hat trick in two minutes.
Senior Devin Webster assisted Mann on his first goal, Runyan assisted on the second, then Mann scored unassisted for the third to make it 6-0.
Wellsboro added two more goals before the first half expired. Fitch again got on the scoreboard with help from Leach with just over two minutes remaining and senior Johnny Rowland finished the scoring with 13 seconds remaining off a Runyan assist.
The Hornets added three more second half goals. Leach's fourth assist found Runyan to make it 9-0 then later assisted sophomore Conrad Becker. Junior Cam Tennis scored the game's final goal off an assist from Becker.
Wellsboro outshot Sayre 48-6 and had 9 corners. Junior Nate Redell made 3 saves for his second straight shutout of the year.
Wellsboro improves to 4-0-1 (3-0-1 NTL). The team hosts Williamson, who currently sits atop the NTL standings at 5-1 (4-0), on Saturday, September 16.
