The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team split the regular season series with Troy with a 6-2 win on Thursday, May 11.
The Hornets scored six runs in six innings before Troy scored their final two runs in the top of the seventh.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, Wellsboro put up two runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Carson Davis and junior Caleb Tennis led off with back-to-back walks with Davis scoring the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by junior Johnny Rowland. Caleb Tennis would later score on an RBI single by freshman Silas Wagaman.
The Hornets went up 3-0 in the third as leadoff man Cam Tennis singled and Davis doubled to right field to score Cam Tennis. Wellsboro put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs. Junior Brent English and Rowland started the inning off with back-to-back singles and junior Trent Darrow drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman Tyler Hancock drew a walk in the next at bat to score English to make it 4-0, junior Dalton Prough walked to score Rowland, and a sacrific fly to center by Cam Tennis scored Darrow for the Hornets' final run.
Davis, Wagaman, and Rowland were all 1-for-2 at the plate, English was 1-for-3, and Cam Tennis was 1-for-4. Rowland pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on 4 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
"It was a good bounce back win," said head coach Philip Prough. "Johnny pitched well. He stayed near the zone all night and relied on his defense. We had much better plate approaches too. It makes a big difference, no matter the talent level your facing."
The win improves the Hornets' record to 9-8 (9-6 NTL Large School Division). The Hornets have been hovering around the required 0.500 mark needed to qualify for District IV playoffs after starting the season 3-0. All the Hornets have to do is win one of their three remaining games against Shikellamy, Danville, and Milton to qualify.
"We need one to make it to districts," concluded Prough. "And we'll need good approaches as we play three straight against bigger schools. And they're all good. Hopefully we come ready for each game and we'll see where the chips fall."
The Hornets are on the road in Shikellamy later today.
