All year the Wellsboro Golf team had one goal, beat Northern Tioga. That finally happened on their home course of Tyoga Country Club on Tuesday, September 26.
"Today was a great win for our team," said head coach Steve Macensky after his 80th career win. "Posting a score of 324 was an incredible day on a tough golf course. I hope this gives the team the confidence they need to play their best golf going forward. I'm very proud of them all."
The Hornets have kept pace with Northern Tioga all year long, and in the past three matches have finished 2nd in all three by a combined 7 strokes. At Tyoga, however, the Hornets pulled away for a 20-stroke win. Northern Tioga shot 344, Sayre was 3rd at 359, Towanda came home in 4th with a 367, North Penn-Mansfield took 5th with 407, and Athens rounded out the field with a 424.
Sayre's Ryan Murrelle won the individual competition with a round of 74 and Northern Tioga's Tanner Adriance was 2nd with a 75.
What the helped the Hornets on the day was having all four scoring individuals finish in the top 10. Junior Brandyn Tuttle led the Hornets with a 77, juniors Ben Barnett and Taynton Repard both shot 81's to tie for 4th, and sophomore Ty Morral finished in 8th with an 85.
Rounding out the top 10 were Northern Tioga's Austin Outman and Towanda's Tyler Hawley (83) tied for 6th, Athens' Nate Kennedy (87) in 9th, and Troy's Hayden Dewey (88) in 10th.
Northern Tioga remains first overall in the NTL at 29-1, Wellsboro sits 2nd at 25-5, Sayre is 3rd at 17-13, Towanda is 4th (11-19), North Penn-Mansfield is 5th (5-25), and Athens is 6th (3-27). Wellsboro and Northern Tioga will be back in action on Thursday, September 28 for a non-league match at Clinton Country Club before the league plays their last match on Monday, October 3 at Tomasso's.
