The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams each picked up wins over Williamson on Friday, March 3.
In the girls game, Wellsboro won 25-18. The Lady Hornets led 8-1 after the first, 16-9 at halftime, and 25-15 after the third quarter. Chelsie English had 10 points and 5 rebounds; Bailey Monks had 4 points and 6 rebounds; Jena Boyce had 3 points, 5 steals, and 6 assists; and Kiyah Boyce, Kathryn Burnett, Emma Coolidge, and Sarah Mosher had 2 points each.
"The girls really passed the ball well and were patient on offense," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We had our lowest turnover total for the year and all the girls contributed to a good team win."
Wellsboro's B team also won 18-11. Emma Brandenburg, Lindsey Marmara, Kathryn Burnett, and Olivia Servatius had 4 points each, and Emma Coolidge had 2 points.
In the boys game, Wellsboro won 43-10.
"I thought we started out slow but picked it up in the second half," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "It was a great team win."
Wellsboro led 12-6 after the first, then outscored Williamson 11-2 in the second to take a 23-8 lead at halftime before holding the Warriors to just two points in the second half.
Joseph Grab led the Hornets with 13 points, Isaac Keane had 9, and Nevin DeCosta added 8. Grab and Keane each grabbed 6 rebounds, Will Poirier had 3 assists, and Darryn Callahan had 4 rebounds.
Wellsboro also won the B game 14-12. The Hornets trailed Williamson 12-9 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the 5-0 in the final five minutes for the win. Liam Manning led Wellsboro with 10 points, and Owen Richardson and Drew Manning scored 2 points each.
The wins improve the boys to 12-6 and the girls to 8-8.
The girls are back in action today at the Towanda tournament, while the boys are off until Wednesday, March 8 at North Penn-Liberty.
