The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team picked up their second straight win as they defeated Canton 10-3 on Wednesday, April 5.
The Hornets got on track right off the bat as junior Dalton Prough led off with a single, stole two bases, and scored on an RBI by junior Caleb Tennis to make it 1-0 after the first. Wellsboro added two more runs in the second as freshman Carson Davis and sophomore Taynton Repard crossed home plate to make it 3-0.
The Hornets' offense exploded with a five-run third inning. Sophomore Cam Tennis, junior Brent English, Davis, Repard, and freshman Silas Wagaman all scored to make it 8-0.
Canton added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the score to 8-3, but Wellsboro added runs in the fifth and seventh. Junior Brandon Plume scored in the fifth and junior Johnny Rowland scored in the seventh.
"We had another good outing from our pitching staff tonight," said head coach Philip Prough. "And solid defense again. We were more relaxed at the plate and it showed with us pounding out 14 hits. Brent led the way with two doubles but we had 8 players with hits. It was a solid effort tonight."
English went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles at the plate to lead Wellsboro on the evening. Rowland went 3-for-5, Prough finished 2-for-3, and Cameron Tennis was 2-for-5. Freshmen Ty Morral and Tyler Hancock, Caleb Tennis, and Repard all finished with hits on the night.
Rowland started and earned his second win of the season. Rowland worked 4 innings, allowed 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), and struck out 4 on 52 pitches. Freshman Billy Lechler came on in relief for 2 innings, and Morral pitched an inning and struck out one.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 2-0 (2-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Friday, April 7 against Towanda.
