The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams picked up a pair of wins on the road against Wyalusing on Monday, February 22.
The young Lady Hornets improved to 9-0 on the year. Liza Manning scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, Cathryn Brought (6 assists) and Jaime Palmer scored 9 each, and Kayla Mengee had 2 points. Lauren Singer and Chelsea Morris had 5 and 4 rebounds, respectively.
"We did a lot of things well, but continue to struggle with turnovers (23) and finishing at the basket (14 of 57 shooting)," said head coach Darrell Morris. "I need to do a better job getting the girls ready in those two areas. If we can correct those, we could be really good, because our defense, rebounding, and play execution have been good all season."
The B team won a close game 18-16 to improve to 8-1 on the year. Breighanna Kemp had 6 and Sarah Mosher had 4.
The Hornet boys snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 6-3 on the year. After trailing 5-4 after the first, Wellsboro outscored Wyalusing 23-15 in the second and third quarters and held the Rams to just six fourth-quarter points for the win.
"It was a well needed win to get our confidence back after losing three straight," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "I thought we came out flat in the first, but our intensity picked up the second, third, and fourth quarters. We played very unselfish basketball tonight and that is why we won."
Billy Lechler led all scorers with 17 points on the night, while Daniel Mitchell had 8, Joseph Grab finished with 7, and Ty Morral had 4. Dylan Tomb, Jacob Trowbridge, and Karter Witmer all pitched in with 2 points each.
Both teams will be on the road in Troy on Wednesday, February 24.
