Two nights after a tough loss to rival Mansfield, the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team rebounded to beat Athens 32-28 on Thursday, January 7.
The Lady Hornets narrowly outscored Athens 10-9 in the first quarter and held the Lady Wildcats to just two points in the second to take a 18-11 halftime lead. Athens battled back and outscored the Wellsboro 17-14 but Wellsboro held on for the win.
"I'm very proud of the girls the way they bounced back from Tuesday's loss over a quality opponent," said head coach John Davis.
Senior Sarah Ingerick led the way with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Lizzie Poirier scored 10 points and had seven rebounds, senior Jada Jackson and junior Jessica Grab had four points each, and junior Janessa Davis and sophomore Rachael Tuttle each added two points.
Jackson grabbed 11 rebounds on the night, Tuttle had four steals, and Davis had three assists.
Wellsboro also won the JV game, 30-27 to improve to 9-2 on the year. Freshman Julia Smith led the way with 15 points, freshman Emma Poirier scored eight, junior Alley Drew had five, and freshman Dani Hunt pitched in two points.
The win improves the Varsity team's record to 8-3 (4-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Monday, January 11 as they travel to Jersey Shore.
