The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team went 2-1 at the Towanda Tournament on Saturday, March 5.
The young Lady Hornets opened the day with a 26-11 win over Central Mountain to move into the Elite 8, where they matched with Northeast Bradford, they only team to beat Wellsboro this year. Wellsboro had foul trouble early against NEB team and trailed by 14 at half, closed it to 6 at the end of the third quarter, but couldn't catch up and lost 32-23.
In their final game of the day, Wellsboro beat Muncy 33-15. Wellsboro jumped out to a 13-2 lead after the first and cruised with a running clock in the second half.
"Our girls had a pretty good day at the Towanda Tournament," said head coach Darrell Morris. "There were some outstanding teams there in the 16 team field, and finishing in the Super Six is an accomplishment. For our girls to be able to compete at a high level throughout the day, in a tournament filled with so many good teams, is evidence of how much they have grown this year as a team."
Jaime Palmer led the Lady Hornets on the day with 38 points, 10 rebounds, 9 steals, and 2 assists. Cathryn Brought had 19 points, 7 rebounds, 10 steals, 2 assists, Liza Manning finished with 9 points, 13 rebounds, 6 steals, and Kayla Mengee had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 7 steals, and 3 assists.
The team, 14-2 overall, will conclude their season this week, with games on the road against Cowanesque Valley on Tuesday, March 8 and at Mansfield on Thursday, March 10 before hosting Liberty in their final game on Saturday, March 12.
