The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated host Muncy 44-27 in the consolation game of the Muncy Rotary Tournament on Saturday, December 10.
The Lady Hornets opened up with a strong first quarter outscoring Muncy 11-6, then pulled away from the Lady Indians by outscoring them 9-2 in the second quarter for a 20-8 halftime lead, something that Muncy never recovered from. Wellsboro added 24 second-half points for the third place finish and their first win of 2016.
Junior Lizzie Poirier scored a game-high 12 points and senior Janessa Davis added 10 for the only two Lady Hornets in double figures. Senior Autum Kitajima, junior Rachael Tuttle, and sophomore Emma Poirier scored 6 points each and senior Jessica Grab pitched in with 4. Tuttle had 15 rebounds in the game, Lizzie Poirier had 9, and Davis grabbed 6. Tuttle also blocked a shot and Lizzie Poirier had 4 assists.
In the JV game Wellsboro lost to Hughesville 23-19. Freshman Liza Manning led the team with 6 points.
Wellsboro (1-1) begins the regular season tomorrow at home against Coudersport.
