The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team suffered a 7-2 loss to Troy on Wednesday, September 7 to start the 2016 season.
The Lady Trojans were in complete control as soon as the whistle started and churned out 4 first half goals. The first one came from Riley McClelland with 33:12 remaining, then Rebecca Case scored at 29:51 to make it 2-0. Brook Ward made it 3-0 Troy with 26:48 showing on the clock, then McClelland scored her second goal at 18:31.
The Lady Hornets managed to get on the board late in the first half. Sophomore Emma Poirier scored with 8:04 remaining to make it 4-1, then sophomore Zoe Iseri scored with 5:29 on an assist from sophomore Julia Smith to cut the score to 4-2.
The second half was all Troy as they added three more goals. Rachel Manley scored with 35:34 showing on the clock to make it 5-2, then Ward scored her second goal of the game at 31:34 to make it 6-2, and finally Nicole Spalding scored with just under 15 minutes remaining.
Troy outshot Wellsboro 35-5 and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Kailee Clymer recorded 12 saves in goal for Wellsboro.
The JV game ended in a 0-0 tie after being called early due to weather.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets start the season 0-1 (0-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 10 against Port Allegany at Mansfield University.
